Steve Smetana, a dedicated substitute teacher at Fuller Elementary School, achieved a major milestone this week by conquering the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. Carrying the Chaparral flag with him, he proudly declared, "Inspire, Nurture and Empower," echoing the Aubrey Independent School District's mission statement. Currently in Tanzania, Mr. Smetana shared that he selected the Chaparral flag as a symbol of his love for his Fuller family and everything Aubrey ISD represents. Without a doubt, Mr. Smetana embodies the spirit of an #InspiringChap.

We continue to celebrate Black History Month, by recognizing the remarkable achievements and contributions of African Americans. Today, we shine a spotlight on the incredible legacy of Dr. Charles Richard Drew, widely regarded as the father of the blood bank. Dr. Drew was not only a brilliant surgeon and pioneer, but also an exceptional educator. While his invention of the blood bank brought him great recognition, he considered his role as a teacher to be his "greatest and most lasting contribution to medicine." Through his mentorship, he fostered a tradition of excellence, training and inspiring a new generation of African American surgeons who met his exacting standards.
