We continue to celebrate Black History Month, by recognizing the remarkable achievements and contributions of African Americans. Today, we shine a spotlight on the incredible legacy of Dr. Charles Richard Drew, widely regarded as the father of the blood bank. Dr. Drew was not only a brilliant surgeon and pioneer, but also an exceptional educator. While his invention of the blood bank brought him great recognition, he considered his role as a teacher to be his "greatest and most lasting contribution to medicine." Through his mentorship, he fostered a tradition of excellence, training and inspiring a new generation of African American surgeons who met his exacting standards.
